I find it more than mildly annoying to routinely read articles decrying Publish or perish.
This phrase was useful to refer to a transition that happened a few decades ago when most (but not all) universities transitioned from teaching-focused to research-focused. For some disciplines, particularly in the humanities, this was probably a bad idea. If we focus on the sciences, however, not only did it often make sense, it is the world now and nobody really wants to turn back the clock. If you are a faculty member at a research university, you are expected to do research. If you are doing research, you are expected to publish.
Someone whose job contract includes a large research component complaining about publish or perish is like a salesperson complaining about sell or die.
