Fun little trick in the Sunday New York Times crossword yesterday: the central theme clue was "The better of two sci-fi franchises", and regardless of whether you put Star Wars or Star Trek, the crossing clues worked
Alder (A99) swims with a dead fish balanced on his head. Back in 1987, a K Pod orca started swimming everywhere with a dead salmon carefully balanced on the top of her head, and it soon became a popular Southern Resident fad as other orcas quickly started mimicking her behavior.
This is one of the few known photos of Carlos Castaneda. These days, his name is likely only to be bought up by a handful of remaining followers, and as a cautionary tale among academics.
But between 1968 and 1973, he was one of the most influential figures in Western culture.
