The British army flew its flag upside down as a distress signal because the Union Jack is just subtly asymmetrical: its soldiers would notice it, while the enemy might not be familiar enough with the flag to pick it up. The US cargo culted this practice, but its flag does not allow for the same sort of quasi-covert signalling.
The Montreal metro uses paper tickets with a tiny (smaller than a grain of salt, see here) chip inside them. The chips are so cheap, that they are disposable. I will be in Montreal next month, so I will try it out.
